NEWS RELEASE: Guelph Humane Society celebrates Pollinator Week with an investment in the nature around us

GUELPH, ON (June 21, 2021) – The Guelph Humane Society (GHS) is celebrating Pollinator Week (June 21-27) with a renewed commitment to our community’s environmental sustainability.

“We have always looked at our new building at 190 Hanlon Creek Blvd. as an investment in our community, and that includes the natural spaces around us,” says Adrienne McBride, Executive Director of GHS. “Our new home is sitting on nearly three acres of land. It was always part of our vision to create a space that will enhance local biodiversity, positively impact local pollinator populations, and provide an opportunity for education and awareness through special programming and educational signage.”

NEWS RELEASE: New Organization Emerges to Champion Animal Welfare across Ontario

GUELPH, ON (June 17, 2021) – A group of several humane societies has formalized their partnership as the Ontario Animal Welfare Network (OAWN), A Collaboration of Leading Community SPCAs & Humane Societies. The OAWN formed after years of informal collaboration between the humane societies to share best practices, lend support and help individual organizations grow — all with the goal of helping animals.

NEWS RELEASE: GHS is reminding motorists to “give turtles a break” this time of year

GUELPH, ON (June 4, 2021) – The Guelph Humane Society (GHS) would like to remind motorists to watch out for turtles at this time of year, especially as we head into a hot and humid stretch of weather.

“We have only had three or four calls about turtles so far this spring,” says Lisa Veit, Associate Director of GHS, “but looking at this forecast, with a few hot and humid days in a row, we expect more turtle calls to start coming in.”

NEWS RELEASE: Guelph Humane Society looking to win $20,000 in the Great Canadian Giving Challenge

GUELPH, ON (June 1, 2021) – The Guelph Humane Society (GHS) is once again taking part in the Great Canadian Giving Challenge this June, and supporters can help GHS win the grand prize by donating via CanadaHelps.org throughout the month. For every $1 donated, GHS will be entered for a chance to win $20,000!

GHS has set a goal of raising $25,000 this month, which will give them 25,000 chances to win the grand prize.

NEWS RELEASE: Guelph Humane Society receives $25,000 grant for 2021 kitten season support

GUELPH, ON (May 10, 2021) – The Guelph Humane Society (GHS) is pleased to announce a $25,000 grant from PetSmart Charities of Canada to help more kittens find homes this kitten season. This funding will help to offset kitten-care related costs for the approximately 400 kittens that will arrive at GHS between spring and fall 2021.

With 400 kittens anticipated at GHS over the next few months, this means 400 spay/neuter surgeries, facilitating 400 adoptions, and providing roughly 1,000 vaccinations.

NEWS RELEASE: Guelph Humane Society recommends patience and tolerance when dealing with nesting geese

GUELPH, ON (April 19, 2021) – The Guelph Humane Society (GHS) is encouraging residents to be mindful of nesting geese over the next three to four weeks. Geese can be very aggressive when protecting their eggs, even more so than when they are protecting their babies.

“Geese incubate their eggs for about 25 days,” says Lisa Veit, Associate Director of GHS. “Once the eggs hatch, the parents and goslings leave the nest and seek out a body of water.”

NEWS RELEASE: First stray farm animal arrives at Guelph Humane Society’s new home

GUELPH, ON (March 18, 2021) – After being in operation for only 10 days in their new home at 190 Hanlon Creek Boulevard, the Guelph Humane Society (GHS) has welcomed its first farm animal into the building. The 18,000 sq ft building has a dedicated farm animal room, and a chicken became its first occupant on Wednesday. The hen was wandering around off of Clairfields Drive W in Guelph, and was brought in as a stray by two GHS Animal Services officers.
