This has been a hard day. The kind of day that makes what we do extra difficult.
This morning, a cat in a carrier was discovered by our Critter Camp staff as they tried to enter the building through our Community Entrance doors. The carrier, left outside of the doors, had a gorgeous orange cat inside – except the cat was practically lifeless. He was cold, with a low heart rate, and was barely responsive to touch.
The cat was rushed to one of our partner clinics in town, and our Animal Care team authorized the clinic to provide any treatment necessary to try and save this cat. Sadly, nothing could bring him back. (more…)

GUELPH, ON (August 26, 2021) – The Guelph Humane Society (GHS) was involved in its first-ever cross-border animal transfer, taking in six dogs from Texas. On Sunday, August 15th, 84 dogs flew from Texas to Windsor, Ontario, on a private plane coordinated and funded by the generous Bissell Pet Foundation. Two GHS team members drove down to Windsor to bring six of those dogs back to Guelph. (more…)
GUELPH, ON (August 18, 2021) – The Guelph Humane Society (GHS) is excited to provide the animals in its care with soothing, calming music, thanks to a donation of 12 Nests from Google Canada.
“A recent study linked low pitch sounds with increased alertness in kenneled dogs, likely due to the association between low pitch sounds like growling and threat,” says Melissa Stolz, Intake and Behaviour Coordinator at GHS. “So music that contains a lower pitch might be more stressful for dogs and potentially other animals. We will want to limit lower pitch music.”
Stolz adds that not only is music calming and relaxing for animals, but it can drown out stressful or disruptive noises. (more…)
GUELPH, ON (August 10, 2021) – The Guelph Humane Society (GHS) is pleased to announce Meaghan Middleton as the new Chair of the GHS Board of Directors. Middleton, who joined the Board earlier this year, is moving into the role previously held by Dr. Shane Bateman.
“The future is bright for the GHS,” says Bateman, who is stepping away from his role on the board after ten years of service. “There are strong foundations for continued growth and support of our community and those animals and people that need support. The organization is in incredibly capable hands, and I am so excited for the future of the organization.”
GUELPH, ON (June 29, 2021) – The Guelph Humane Society (GHS) held its 127th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Tuesday, June 22nd, led by Dr. Shane Bateman, Chair of the GHS Board. The meeting, which was held virtually for the second year in a row, was open to active GHS members.
Dr. Bateman, along with GHS Executive Director, Adrienne McBride, provided a year in review for members, as well as an update on the organization’s move to 190 Hanlon Creek Blvd.
GUELPH, ON (June 25, 2021) – The Guelph Humane Society (GHS) was honoured to receive an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) earlier today, thanks to the Dave Mounsey Memorial Fund.
The Dave Mounsey Memorial Fund is dedicated to the donation of life-saving defibrillators to public buildings in the name of fallen Law Enforcement, Fire, EMS and Military members who have died in the line of duty. The memorial fund was founded by OPP Sgt. Patrick Armstrong in honour of his friend and fellow OPP officer, Dave Mounsey, who died in the line of duty back in 2006.
GUELPH, ON (June 21, 2021) – The Guelph Humane Society (GHS) is celebrating Pollinator Week (June 21-27) with a renewed commitment to our community’s environmental sustainability.
“We have always looked at our new building at 190 Hanlon Creek Blvd. as an investment in our community, and that includes the natural spaces around us,” says Adrienne McBride, Executive Director of GHS. “Our new home is sitting on nearly three acres of land. It was always part of our vision to create a space that will enhance local biodiversity, positively impact local pollinator populations, and provide an opportunity for education and awareness through special programming and educational signage.”
GUELPH, ON (June 17, 2021) – A group of several humane societies has formalized their partnership as the Ontario Animal Welfare Network (OAWN), A Collaboration of Leading Community SPCAs & Humane Societies. The OAWN formed after years of informal collaboration between the humane societies to share best practices, lend support and help individual organizations grow — all with the goal of helping animals.
