Three baby domestic chickens were found abandoned in a garbage dumpster behind an apartment building on Speedvale Avenue West in Guelph at approximately 6:00 p.m. on January 25th.

An Animal Services Officer from the Guelph Humane Society responded to a call from the building manager who found them.

The birds appear to be approximately three to five days old.  On initial assessment, two were believed to be in good condition while the third was in life-threatening condition.

The chicks were taken for after-hours veterinary care and assessment. Unfortunately, one chick did not survive. The other two are being monitored closely.

GHS encourages community members that may have information about this incident to report it to the Provincial Animal Welfare Service (PAWS) at 1-833-9-ANIMAL (1-833-926-4625).

“It is disturbing that these young birds were abandoned and left in these grave circumstances,” says Lisa Veit, GHS’s Executive Director. “All of the chicks most certainly would have died over night had they not been found. We are grateful to the good samaritan who contacted us to rescue them.”
