Abandoned in a taped-shut box, Lucy now needs care for herself and her unborn kittens.

A pregnant cat named Lucy laying down in intake room.

Lucy arrived at the Guelph Humane Society this weekend in a way no animal ever should.

Someone placed her inside a diaper box, taped the lid shut, and left her beneath a bush.

Thankfully, a kind stranger heard her meowing, stopped to investigate, and gave Lucy the chance she desperately needed.

“In my six years at GHS, I’ve seen many heartbreaking situations. But the deliberate cruelty of leaving a vulnerable animal trapped in a box is deeply troubling,” shared Katherine Leonard, Senior Manager, Community Services.

Lucy is only about a year and a half old. And today, we learned she is pregnant and ready to give birth at any moment.

We don’t know how long she was left alone, frightened, and unable to escape. We only know that when she arrived at GHS, she needed help. She needed safety. And she needed someone to care.

Now, Lucy is no longer alone.

Our medical team will provide the care she needs throughout the remainder of her pregnancy and when her kittens arrive. Our staff will surround her with patience, gentleness, and compassion; everything she should have received from the beginning.

And with time, we hope Lucy will learn something important: that people can be trusted, that kindness exists, and that a better life is possible.

But helping Lucy heal is just the beginning.

Every day, vulnerable animals arrive at GHS needing urgent medical attention, a safe place to recover, and the time and care it takes to begin again. Your generosity makes that care possible. Your gift today can help Lucy and other animals like her heal, feel safe, and find the loving homes they deserve.

I know what’s possible when a frightened animal is met with compassion and surrounded by people who refuse to give up.

With your support, Lucy and her babies can have the future they deserve.
