GUELPH, ON (June 28, 2024) The Guelph Humane Society (GHS) is urging Guelph and Wellington County residents to consider the impact of fireworks on pets and wildlife as Canada Day celebrations approach. While Canada Day is one of the busiest holidays of the year for firework displays, they pose significant risks to our furry and feathered friends.

“For many pets, the loud noises and bright flashes of fireworks can cause extreme anxiety and stress,” says Lisa Veit, GHS Executive Director. “Common reactions in dogs and cats include trembling, hiding and attempts to escape, which can lead to injury or even getting lost.”

Fireworks can also be detrimental to wildlife. The unexpected explosions can disrupt nesting birds, causing them to abandon their nests and leaving their chicks vulnerable. Other wildlife may flee their habitats in panic, leading to injuries.

“Fireworks can have a ripple effect on local ecosystems,” says Veit. “Animals are forced out of their safe spaces, which can have negative impacts on their health and behaviour.”

To help protect pets and wildlife, GHS recommends the following measures:

“We can celebrate in ways that are inclusive and considerate of all the creatures we share our environment with,” says Veit. “By making small changes, we can enjoy the festivities without compromising the well-being of pets and wildlife.”
