GUELPH, ON (September 17, 2019) – Staff, volunteers, donors, community members – and a couple of very good dogs – joined in the festivities today during the ceremonial groundbreaking event at the site of the Guelph Humane Society’s new home, 190 Hanlon Creek Blvd in Guelph. Construction for the new building is expected to be completed by Fall 2020.

“This is truly a happy day for people and animals in the Guelph community, as we take this ceremonial step toward building a home we can truly call our own,” says Dr. Shane Bateman. “The Guelph community has changed and grown over the last 50 years, and so have the needs of animals. I’m excited for the many more opportunities we will have to continue our important work in this community animal centre.”

The new building will replace the outdated animal shelter located at 500 Wellington Road in Guelph, where the Guelph Humane Society has been headquartered for 50 years. In addition to design features such as natural light and quiet, comfortable space for animals inside and out, the building will also provide space for community education and outreach initiatives.

“We have been working toward this day for a very long time, and we are so grateful for the support of every person here,” said Adrienne McBride, Executive Director. “Thank you for being instrumental in helping us reach more than two thirds of our fundraising goal before the first shovels hit the ground. It is my hope that together, the momentum will continue, and we will make short work of raising the final $3.5 million.”

Gifts to the Guelph Humane Society’s capital campaign are gratefully accepted at www.guelphhumane.ca.
