GUELPH, ON (May 6, 2016) – The Guelph Humane Society is reaching out to the local rural community in hopes of finding more barn homes to participate in their Barn Cat Adoption Program.

While the majority of cats that come into the Guelph Humane Society are able to be adopted into traditional home environments, there are some cats for which this is not suitable. The barn cat adoption program offers a second chance for difficult-to-place felines, such as cats that are feral or poorly socialized, or those with behavioural issues such as poor litter box habits.

The spring and summer months are always the busiest time of intake for cats at the shelter. Thus the need for barn homes generally increases during this time as well, and the Guelph Humane Society is hoping to develop a network of barn homes to meet the anticipated growing needs in placing these cats over the coming months.

To participate in the barn cat adoption program, adopters must provide:

Adopting a barn cat can be a mutually beneficial relationship – as not only are adopters providing a cat with a new home and a second chance, but the cats are also providing a natural deterrent to rodents within the barn environment.

While there is no adoption fee for cats through the Barn Cat Adoption Program, the Guelph Humane Society greatly appreciates donations to help support this important initiative.
“Cats adopted through our barn cat program are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped, just like all of our cats available for adoption,” says Lisa Veit, Associate Director of the Guelph Humane Society. “Throughout the adoption process, we offer advice to adopters on the best way to acclimate the cats to their new surroundings in order to ease the transition.”
